Stampeders still lead CFL Power Rankings

The Calgary Stampeders rallied late to beat the B.C. Lions, and maintained their hold on top spot in the TSN.ca CFL Power Rankings, ahead of the Ottawa Redblacks and Edmonton Eskimos.

Even though the Redblacks lost at home to Toronto, they moved up a spot, with Henry Burris returning at quarterback and the Eskimos suffering a home loss.

It's tough sledding for a lot of teams in the league, though, as injuries seem to be preventing any team from gaining significant ground. Even a team like Toronto, leading the league with four wins and coming off a road win at Ottawa, still has to deal with an unproven quarterback, Logan Kilgore, which makes it difficult for them to make a dramatic climb in the rankings.

But, as time goes on, these teams will start to separate a little more clearly. Right now, it's Calgary on top and a jumbled mess of teams in pursuit.

It didn't come easily, as they trailed B.C. 34-19 going into the fourth quarter, but the Stampeders emerged victorious in overtime, solidifying their hold on top spot in the rankings. Slotback Greg Wilson busted out with three catches for 118 yards and two scores, easily his most productive game out of his eight career CFL contests.

Key Injuries: DT Quinn Smith (arm), DT Junior Turner (shoulder), DT Frank Beltre (foot), LB Glenn Love (shoulder), WR Joe West (ankle), T Dan Federkeil.

Even with a loss to Toronto, the Redblacks slide up a spot because at the time of last week's rankings, Henry Burris wasn't slotted in as Ottawa's starting quarterback. Even though Burris struggled (20 of 34, 218 YDS, 1 TD, 2 INT) against the Argonauts, the prospect of having a proven veteran back at the controls helps the long-term forecast.

Key Injuries: RB William Powell (Achilles), RB Travon Van (knee), QB Trevor Harris (knee), DB Jonathan Rose

Defence has been a problem for the Eskimos all season, but getting shredded by former Eskimos QB Matt Nichol in a home loss to Winnipeg really drives home how poorly they are playing on that side of the ball.

Key Injuries: DB John Ojo (Achilles), DT Don Oramasionwu (triceps), DB Deion Belue (hamstring), C Justin Sorensen (shoulder)

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Even as it seems that Zach Collaros isn't quite ready to return, the Ticats gain ground during their bye week because injuries and losses hit other teams in the middle of the rankings. QB Jeremiah Masoli has done a nice job holding down the fort in Collaros' absence and Hamilton could be poised for a big second-half push.

Key Injuries: QB Zach Collaros (knee)

The disappointing result in Calgary undermined what had been another impressive showing from QB Jonathon Jennings (26 of 41 for 374 YDS, 3 TD, 2 INT, 44 rush YDS, 1 TD), but the more immediate concern is that injuries hit the Lions hard, so they will be offering up a different look, particularly on defence, against Montreal this week.

Key Injuries:  DB T.J. Lee (Achilles), WR Nick Moore (knee), DE Craig Roh (neck), DE David Menard (hip), DT Mic'hael Brooks (ankle), CB Brandon Stewart (ankle), DB Mike Edem (hamstring)

Toronto Argonauts

QB Logan Kilgore had attempted seven passes in the CFL prior to completing 25 of 42 passes for 322 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions, in a surprising win at Ottawa. As positive as the result was, it's still going to take some time for Kilgore to establish that he's up to handling the starting QB role in Ricky Ray's absence.

Key Injuries: DT Tracy Robertson (knee), WR Tori Gurley (lower body), WR Kevin Elliott, DB Jermaine Gabriel (neck), QB Ricky Ray (knee)

Montreal Alouettes

After struggling offensively through four games, it was encouraging for the Alouettes to hang 41 points on Saskatchewan. They could use a few more threats offensively, but QB Kevin Glenn, RB Brandon Rutley (in the absence of Tyrell Sutton) and WR Duron Carter give Montreal a competent core around which to build their offence.

Key Injuries: WR S.J. Green (knee), WR Kenny Stafford (toe), RB Tyrell Sutton), C Luc Brodeur-Jourdain (knee)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

If QB Matt Nichols can perform like he did (26 of 33 for 304 YDS, 1 TD) against Edmonton, things could be looking up for the Blue Bombers, but there are a few concerns. One, Nichol hasn't typically performed like that over the course of his CFL career, and injuries have decimated the receiving corps, prompting the Bombers to bring veteran Clarence Denmark back into the fold. But, a win at Edmonton is at least good enough to get out of the basement.

Key Injuries: C Jeff Keeping, CB Johnny Adams, DB Teague Sherman, WR Ryan Smith, DB Macho Harris, CB Chris Randle, WR Weston Dressler (knee), WR Darvin Adams (arm)

The Roughriders know that they are fighting uphill in the absence of starting quarterback Darian Durant, but getting routed 41-3 at Montreal is a slap in the face. Even worse, it drops Saskatchewan to the bottom of the rankings again.

Key Injuries:  DE Eric Norwood (knee), G Chris Best, QB Darian Durant (ankle), T Xavier Fulton, C Dan Clark,
