The Minnesota Timberwolves announced on Sunday evening that centre Nikola Pekovic would miss the entirety of the 2016-17 National Basketball Association season with recurring ankle pain.

Pekovic, 30, has yet to play a full 82 games in his six seasons in the NBA.

A native of Bijelo Polje, Montenegro, Pekovic has been limited to just 44 games over the past two seasons with the ankle injury. Pekovic had Achilles surgery in April of 2015.

The 31st overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, Pekovic has averaged 12.6 points and 6.7 rebounds over 24.9 minutes a night over 271 games.

The team says a determination about furture seasons will be made at a later date.

Pekovic has two years and $23.7 million fully guaranteed remaining on a five-year, $60 million deal signed in 2013.
