West rules in the CFL Power Rankings

Swarming defence

The Calgary Stampeders are running roughshod over the league and continue to sit atop the TSN.ca CFL Power Rankings, ahead of the Edmonton Eskimos, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and B.C. Lions.

Not surprisingly, since there isn't an Eastern team with a winning record -- Ottawa's 7-7-1 mark is the lofty bar teams are chasing -- the rankings are being dominated by the West Division.

While that is true, the more accurate representation is that the rest of the league is still stuck chasing the 14-1-1 Stampeders, and can't gain ground.

Wins pile upon wins for the Stampeders, who responded to injuries to in their receiving corps by getting more work for DaVaris Daniels and Kamar Jorden, who have been productive starters. Add in Marquay McDaniel, Anthony Parker and injured guys like Bakari Grant and Joe West, and it's going to be tough for defences to match up, especially when Bo Levi Mitchell is the one spreading the ball around.

Key Injuries: C Pierre Lavertu (neck), T Dan Federkeil, WR Bakari Grant, WR Joe West

Edmonton Eskimos

Coming off a bye week, the Eskimos are one team capable of playing a high-octane offensive game that might possibly contend with Calgary. If newcomer Vidal Hazelton can contribute, then maybe Edmonton can be the high-scoring team that they probably need to be in order to compensate for their defence.

Key Injuries: DB John Ojo (Achilles), G Danny Groulx, SB Cory Watson (leg)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Bombers don't have the type of explosive offence that the Alberta teams offer, but RB Andrew Harris can be a difference-maker, and Winnipeg's strength is the ability to make big plays on defence. Last week, it was Canadian defensive back Taylor Loffler, who had two interceptions and a forced fumble against B.C.

Key Injuries: C Jeff Keeping (knee), WR Darvin Adams (arm), DB Macho Harris (lower body), T Pat Neufeld (lower leg), DB C.J. Sheppard

B.C. Lions

  • YDSA/G
    355.7

The Lions have lost three of four, with each of the losses coming by a margin of four points or fewer. Not the end of the world, and it shows how close the secondary group of contenders might be, but the Lions are left to chase at this point.

Key Injuries:  DB T.J. Lee (Achilles), WR Nick Moore (knee), DB Steven Clarke (knee), DB Ronnie Yell (foot), DT Mic'hael Brooks

Ottawa Redblacks

  • YDSA/G
    365.3

The Redblacks have had some ups and downs, but Henry Burris' return brought a 30-29 win at Hamilton and that's enough at this point to be the best the East has to offer, for whatever that might be worth.

Key Injuries: RB William Powell (Achilles), T Tommie Draheim, DE Arnaud Gascon-Nadon (ankle), T SirVincent Rogers (ankle), WR Chris Williams (knee)

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

    353.0

Jeremiah Masoli has been solid enough filling in at quarterback, but the Tiger-Cats appear to need better than solid. Four losses in the past five games has Hamilton reeling, but they're still the most likely challenger to the Redblacks in the East.

Key Injuries: DB Craig Butler, DB Johnny Sears, CB Demond Washington, RB C.J. Gable, RB Ross Scheurmann, C Mike Filler, CB Rico Murray, WR Luke Tasker, SB Chad Owens, QB Zach Collaros (concussion)

Curtis Steele is the Riders' leading rusher, with a modest 314 yards, but may not be for long because Steele is injured and his replacement, Joe McKnight, dropped 150 rushing yards at Toronto last week.

Key Injuries:  DE Eric Norwood (knee), G Chris Best, C Dan Clark, RB Curtis Steele, G Brendon Labatte (head), WR Naaman Roosevelt (leg), RB Curtis Steele

Toronto Argonauts

  • YDS/G
    332.4
  • YDSA/G
    376.3

The Argonauts have been stomped for five straight games, losing by a cumulative differential of 107 points, and yet the Argos move up slightly because of the expectation that Ricky Ray will return to the starting quarterback job this week. It's not going to be an easy finish to the year, with road games at Calgary and Edmonton to wrap up the schedule.

Key Injuries: DT Tracy Robertson (knee), DB Jermaine Gabriel (neck), G Greg Van Roten (ankle), DE Ricky Foley (foot), T Josh Bourke

Montreal Alouettes

This Week: 9 | Last Week: 8 | Record: 4-11

  • YDS/G

  • YDSA/G
    389.2

Six losses in the past seven games has the Alouettes sliding and dropping two receivers, including team-leading receiver Duron Carter (as well as Kenny Stafford), hardly makes them look more promising for the last three weeks of the season. They're also going to take a look at Vernon Adams Jr., their rookie out of Oregon, at quarterback. Could be great, could be not-so-great.

Key Injuries: WR S.J. Green (knee), C Luc Brodeur-Jourdain (knee), DT Michael Klassen (leg), RB Tyrell Sutton (rib)
