PORTLAND, Ore. - The Kelowna Rockets have advanced to the Western Hockey League championship after defeating the Portland Winterhawks 8-4 on Sunday in Game 6 of their Western Conference final.

Kelowna will face the the Eastern Conference champion Brandon Wheat Kings, who qualified for the chance to play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup by eliminating the Calgary Hitmen on Friday in five games.

Madison Bowey and Dillon Dube each had a pair of goals for the Rockets, who used a five-goal third period to blow the game open. Tyson Baillie scored once and set up two more for Kelowna while Chance Braid, Justin Kirkland and Cole Linaker rounded out the offence.

Chase De Leo struck twice and tacked on an assist for the Winterhawks, who also got goals from Adam Henry and Layne Viveiros.

Jackson Whistle started in net for Kelowna but was yanked after allowing three goals on eight shots in 13:30 of action. Michael Herringer stopped 30-of-31 shots in relief to earn the victory. Portland's Adin Hill turned away 33-of-39 shots in defeat.

Both clubs went 0 for 3 on the power play.

Game 1 between the Rockets and Wheat Kings is set for Friday in Brandon.
