With free agency having slowed to a trickle, here is a report card on how the nine CFL teams did:

(A) Ottawa – Marcel Desjardins and company did an excellent job upgrading his offensive line and receiving core with his new additions. SirVincent Rogers comes over from the Argos and helps stabilize the left tackle position. Ernest Jackson, Greg Ellingson and Brad Sinopoli give Henry Burris more weapons on an offence which was worst in the league last year. Ellingson and Burris have history from 2013 when both were members of the Tiger-Cats. Jackson was the hottest receiver in the league down the stretch for BC while Sinopoli gives Ottawa a potential ratio changer if Rick Campbell and Desjardins decide to go with two National receivers.

(B+) Winnipeg – G.M. Kyle Walters was active in improving his offensive line. Stanley Bryant, who is possibly the best left tackle in the CFL, left Calgary and will help out Drew Willy's blindside. Marc Dile came over from Hamilton and if he can stay healthy there is a good chance he can start at right tackle or at least give the Blue Bombers more depth. Darvin Adams came over from Toronto and he could replace Romby Bryant if he has a good training camp. Linebacker and National Sam Hurl gives Mike O'Shea and his staff a possible ratio changer if he can start and National Ivan Brown can spell Jake Thomas on the defensive line. If Walters had signed another receiver he would have received an A for his efforts.

(B) Montreal – Jim Popp very rarely delves into free agency. He was busy this February. Picking up Dan LeFevour was genius for the longtime general manager. LeFevour, who is coming off an ACL injury, will push incumbent Jonathan Crompton for playing time if healthy. He played great when Zach Collaros went down with concussions issues for Hamilton. Sam Giguere will be an instant upgrade over veteran Alouette Eric Deslauriers and two-time Grey Cup champion Nik Lewis will bring over a wealth of experience for the two young QB's. National running back Carl Volny will help out on special teams. Former Roughrider and Eskimo Rod Williams will challenge for a spot in the defensive backfield. Just not sure why Dobson Collins was signed by Montreal.

(B-) Edmonton – Ed Hervey replaced the loss of guard Matt O'Donnell to the NFL with former Eskimo Greg Wojt. If Wojt can stay healthy this will be an excellent replacement. Alexander Krausnick-Groh comes back to Edmonton after playing one season with the Redblacks and gives the team some depth at centre. International receiver Wallace Miles comes over after a pretty good season with the Redblacks. Miles will give the team some depth and good downfield speed.

(C) Saskatchewan – G.M. Brandan Taman made sure he had an experienced back-up to Darian Durant when he signed former Roughrider Kevin Glenn. National safety-linebacker and local product Keenan MacDougall replaces Sam Hurl who left for Winnipeg while offensive lineman Gord Hinse and linebacker Joash Gesse were signed for depth and special teams reasons.

(C-) Hamilton - G.M. and Head Coach Kent Austin replaced the loss of free-agent National receiver Sam Giguere with ex-Argo Spencer Watt. This is a bit of a downgrade for Hamilton. Watt needs to stay healthy. Anthony Woodson was also brought in from Toronto and he will help out the special teams and insurance in the backfield if CJ Gable or Nic Grigsby gets hurt.

(C-) British Columbia - Wally Buono isn't a big player in free agency. The Lions GM could have made a big splash if National receiver Austin Collie can play this season. Collie, whose father played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 80's hopes he can play after suffering concussions in the NFL. BC also signed National defensive back Chris Rwabukamba from Edmonton to potentially replace JR Larose.

(D) Calgary – G.M. and Head Coach John Hufnagel is the best in the business. The D grade is unfair because "Huf," doesn't have to dabble in free agency. His team is one of the best in the CFL, year in and year out. He loses Brett Jones to the NFL but has an instant replacement in Pierre Lavertu. He loses Stanley Bryant and re-signs Edwin Harrison to play left-tackle. Calgary did sign International running back Keith Toston away from Saskatchewan. He gives the team some quality depth and defensive tackle Brandon Boudreaux. Boudreaux will be expected to rush the passer with the loss of Shawn Lemon to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

(D-) Toronto – G.M. Jim Barker isn't a big player in free agency as well. They did let some guys get away. Spencer Watt, Anthony Woodson, SirVincent Rogers, Ivan Brown and Darvin Adams to name a few. I believe Rogers is the only important player they lost. Watt to me was overrated while Woodson and Brown were good depth National players.
