Esks holding off Stamps in CFL Power Rankings

The Edmonton Eskimos remain the top team in the TSN.ca CFL Power Rankings, but the Calgary Stampeders have closed the gap with their Alberta rivals.

Both teams are 12-4, keeping them ahead of the field, and with the Stampeders making a move to acquire Jerome Messam, they addressed the hole in their lineup created by the latest injury to Jon Cornish.

The only shuffle in this week's rankings saw Hamilton jump up a spot after a win at Montreal, and the Ticats move came at the expense of Toronto, which lost at home against Calgary.

Needed overtime to escape against the B.C. Lions, but the Eskimos are going to be a handful with receivers Adarius Bowman and Derel Walker becoming dual threats in the passing game.

Key Injuries: RB John White (Achilles), G Simeon Rottier (knee), WR Shamawd Chambers (knee), G Greg Wojt (concussion).

Calgary Stampeders

A solid road win at Toronto, coupled with the addition of RB Jerome Messam at the trade deadline tightens the gap at the top of the rankings.

Key Injuries: DT Corey Mace (foot), T Edwin Harrison (leg), DB Joe Burnett (ankle), MLB Juwan Simpson (clavicle), RB Jon Cornish (neck), T Dan Federkeil (leg), DB Fred Bennett (arm).

If QB Jeff Mathews is going to continue like this -- he completed 84% (21 of 25) passes at Montreal in a 23-11 win -- then the Ticats could be in business down the stretch.

Key Injuries: DT Brian Bulcke (knee), DT Linden Gaydosh (Achilles), RB C.J. Gable (elbow), WR Andy Fantuz (arm), DE Eric Norwood (undisclosed), DB Johnny Sears Jr. (undisclosed) and S Mike Daly (undisclosed), WR Bakari Grant (undisclosed), QB Zach Collaros (knee).

Three interceptions for QB Trevor Harris made it tough for the Argos to keep pace with the Stamps and spotting Calgary 17 points before getting into the game in the second half made for an uphill battle.

Key Injuries: QB Ricky Ray (shoulder), SB Andre Durie (knee).

Ottawa Redblacks

QB Henry Burris continues to lead an impressive passing attack, but RB William Powell has been solid in his first couple of games too. The Redblacks have been quite a story this year, going from two wins in 2014 to a playoff team a year later.

Key Injuries: WR Marcus Henry (undisclosed), MLB Travis Brown (shoulder).

Montreal Alouettes

Kevin Glenn's debut wasn't ideal, as Montreal managed just 11 points and Glenn was picked off three times against Hamilton, but if the Alouettes are going to make a late-season push, they needed an upgrade at quarterback.

Key Injuries: DE Aaron Lavarias (arm), WR James Rodgers (undisclosed), QB Dan LeFevour (shoulder), LB Bear Woods (pectoral), QB Rakeem Cato (concussion).

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Rallied late to make the final score (27-24) more respectable, but the Bombers were losing by 18 with 90 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Key Injuries:  QB Drew Willy (knee), RB Paris Cotton (arm).

B.C. Lions

This Week: 8 | Last Week: 8 | Record: 5-10

Rookie QB Jonathon Jennings is making the Lions' offence more dangerous, passing for 1,498 yards over the past five games, with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions in the past four games. It's enough for Jennings to remain the starter even while Travis Lulay is ready to play.

Key Injuries:  None.

Saskatchewan Roughriders

This Week: 9 | Last Week: 9 | Record: 2-14

TEAM STATS

Not that there was much danger of  the Riders moving out of the basement, but after trading away RB Jerome Messam, their most consistent offensive threat this season, Saskatchewan has solidified their hold on the bottom run of this nine-step ladder.

Key Injuries:  QB Darian Durant (Achilles), ILB Shea Emry (neck).
