Redblacks claim top spot in CFL Power Rankings

The Ottawa Redblacks, led by their unstoppable quarterback Trevor Harris, have taken over top spot in the TSN.ca CFL Power Rankings, pulling ahead of the idle Calgary Stampeders.

Harris has been incredibly accurate and continued with a dominant performance at Toronto last week. Those massive yardage totals have been too big to ignore, but only give Ottawa a slight edge in the battle for No. 1.

There weren't any big movers this week, with teams shuffling up or down a spot, but through four weeks, we're starting to get a decent idea where each team sits, with contenders starting to separate from pretenders.

Well, until there is a team that figures out how to stop QB Trevor Harris, it's hard to keep the Redblacks out of top spot any longer. Through four games, he's completed 82.5% of his passes, more than 5% better than the league record for a single season, and in addition leading the league with 1,475 passing yards, Harris has thrown for nine touchdowns and just one interception.

Key Injuries: RB William Powell (Achilles), RB Travon Van (knee), QB Henry Burris (finger)

The bye week didn't protect the Stampeders in top spot, but they're still neck-and-neck with the Redblacks, as one might expect after finishing with a tie in Ottawa during Week Three.

Key Injuries: DT Quinn Smith (arm), DT Junior Turner (shoulder), LB Glenn Love (shoulder)

Edmonton Eskimos

While a four-point victory at Winnipeg isn't earth-shattering, the Eskimos offence is starting to click. With QB Mike Reilly averaging 408.7 passing yards per game, as receivers Adarius Bowman and Derek Walker may be the league's best 1-2 punch, combining to average 262.0 receiving yards per game, there is a good chance that the Eskimos are going to be able to convert those yards into points.

Key Injuries: DB John Ojo (Achilles), DT Don Oramasionwu (triceps)

After getting pulled from a Week Three loss to Toronto, QB Jonathon Jennings responded with the most prolific passing game (429 yards, 3 TD) in a 40-27 win at Saskatchewan. If Jennings can continue to play at a high level, then it's possible they could challenge Edmonton and Calgary for supremacy in the West, but quarterback play is currently an advantage for the Alberta teams.

Key Injuries:  RB Jeremiah Johnson (ankle), DB T.J. Lee (Achilles)

Toronto Argonauts

Stayed with the Redblacks through three-plus quarters, until allowing a punt return touchdown by Tristan Jackson, before ultimately losing 30-20 at home. Given that they allowed Trevor Harris to complete 28 of 31 passes for 392 yards, it's kind of remarkable that the Argos were in the game for so long.

Key Injuries: DT Tracy Robertson (knee)

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Just when the TiCats were looking a little rattled, after back-to-back losses, they steamrolled the Alouettes in Montreal, recording eight sacks along the way. They'll be even better once they can get Zach Collaros back under centre, because Jeremiah Masoli hasn't been able to duplicate his terrific Week One performance.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

  • YDSA/G

Despite surrendering 517 yards, the Blue Bombers lost by just four points at home against Edmonton. That might count as a bit of a moral victory, but Winnipeg will need to patch together a secondary in order to cover for injuries that contributed to that high yardage count.

Key Injuries: C Jeff Keeping, CB Johnny Adams, DB Bruce Johnson, LB Sam Hurl, DB Teague Sherman, WR Ryan Smith

There was reason for concern when Kevin Glenn started missing practice last week, and that concern was justified after Rakeem Cato struggled and was replaced in the fourth quarter by Vernon Adams Jr., a rookie out of Oregon.

Key Injuries: WR S.J. Green (knee), QB Kevin Glenn (eye)

Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Roughriders are in danger of having another season go completely off the rails, as they have struggled without Darian Durant and are facing the prospect of missing a stabilizing presence in their offence. Mitchell Gale, who was recently acquired from Toronto, had 100 career passing yards in four CFL seasons prior to last week, but he held his own (17 for 30, 247 yards, 1 TD) in a relief appearance during the loss to B.C.
