ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Redskins have signed three-time Pro Bowl safety Donte Whitner and placed David Bruton on injured reserve.

Whitner has played 10 NFL seasons, most recently with the Cleveland Browns. The 31-year-old was released in April and said he turned down a contract offer from the Los Angeles Rams because he wanted a one-year deal.

Coach Jay Gruden says the team had to make roster decisions with a banged-up defence and opted to put Bruton on IR with the strong safety in the league's concussion protocol.

The Redskins also released defensive lineman Kendall Reyes and signed former Jacksonville Jaguars safety Josh Evans. Gruden says he's confident in the team's in-house defensive linemen and wanted to fill holes in the secondary.
