Amid speculation tying him to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Calgary Stampeders head coach John Hufnagel distanced himself from the rumours in a statement on Thursday.

"In response to rumours regarding my future in the Canadian Football League with a club other than the Calgary Stampeders, I feel the need to express the fact that I am extremely happy and proud to be a member of the Stampeders," Hufnagel said in the release. "I'm under contract with the club beyond the 2015 season and I intend to honour that commitment."

The 63-year-old Hufnagel is in his eighth season at the helm of the Stampeders, leading them to Grey Cup victories in 2008 and in 2014. He is a two-time winner of the Annis Stuskus Trophy, given to the CFL's coach of the year.

"I'm very pleased with our organization and all we have achieved, and I look forward to many future successes," Hufnagel continued in the statement.

A native of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, Hufnagel began his coaching career in 1988 with the Roughriders. That year, the team went 11-7 and finished second in the West. The Roughriders lost in the West semi-final to the BC Lions.

After an 0-9 start to the season, the Roughriders fired coach Corey Chamblin and general manager Brendan Taman on August 31. Bob Dyce was named coach and Jeremy O'Day named GM on an interim basis. The team beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 37-19 on Sunday for its first win of the season.

Speculation in recent days had Hufnagel joining the Roughriders in both a head coach and GM capacity.

With his future addressed, Hufnagel now hopes to return focus on the Stampeders' season at hand.

"After reconfirming these intentions to our fans, players and organization, I hope everyone's focus remains entirely on having a tremendous 2015 season, not speculation or false rumours about the future," Hufnagel concluded his statement.

The defending Grey Cup champion Stampeders are 8-2 and sit atop the West. The team is next in action on Saturday when it visits the Edmonton Eskimos.
