Stamps still lead CFL Power Rankings

Week Three brought some progress for the defending champs, and it was enough for the Calgary Stampeders to remain the top team in the CFL Power Rankings.

Bo Levi Mitchell

The Calgary Stampeders continue to hold top spot in the TSN.ca CFL Power Rankings, ahead of the B.C. Lions and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

After losing at Calgary, the Toronto Argonauts slipped, from two to four, this week, while there was a flip-flop in the lower tier of the rankings.

Despite losing at Winnipeg, the Montreal Alouettes gained a spot, from eight to seven, pulling ahead of the Ottawa RedBlacks, who were routed in Edmonton.

The Stampeders, generally, were better in Week Three against Toronto, but more importantly, QB Bo Levi Mitchell was sharp. He's one of the prime reasons that Calgary was ranked No. 1 coming into the season, so it's nice to back up the billing with performance.

Key Injuries: DT Corey Mace (foot).

B.C. Lions

Needed to rally from an 11-point deficit in the final 2:21 of regulation to force overtime against Saskatchewan, but the Lions managed the feat and spread the ball around, with six receivers gaining at least 49 yards in the game. We're still at the stage of the season, in a league in which no team is better than 2-1, where the upside of the Stampeders and Lions is trumping relative mediocrity from other challengers.

Key Injuries:  WR Lavelle Hawkins (arm), DB Ryan Phillips (hamstring).

Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Sometimes being on the bye week is a good place to be, and if not playing means fewer injuries for one week, the Tiger-Cats will take it.

Key Injuries: RB C.J. Gable (hand), WR Luke Tasker (knee), DT Brian Bulcke (knee), DT Linden Gaydosh (Achilles), DE Eric Norwood (lower body).

Toronto Argonauts

After an exciting first half in Calgary, the Argos and Stampeders ground to a halt in the second half, managing just three field goals amidst a flurry of penalty flags. Not a bad showing, all in all, but enough to slide behind Hamilton in this week's ranking.

Key Injuries: QB Ricky Ray (shoulder), SB Andre Durie (knee).

Edmonton Eskimos

This does seem harsh, for a team coming off a 29-point win to not move up a spot, but the Argos didn't fall far enough for the Eskimos to gain this week. Nevertheless, it was an encouraging performance, to see the offence move the ball so effectively with Matt Nichols at QB.

Key Injuries: RB John White (Achilles), G Simeon Rottier (knee), WR Shamawd Chambers (knee), QB Mike Reilly (knee), WR Wallace Miles.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

At some point, the Bombers' porous defence is either going to get better or simply be a problem that catches up to them. After allowing 420 yards to the Alouettes, though, the Bombers still escaped with a win.

Key Injuries:  None.

Montreal Alouettes

The Alouettes fell short at Winnipeg, but it was a respectable showing and QB Rakeem Cato passed for 317 yards in his second career start. As losses go, a two-point loss on the road, while outgaining the opposition by 125 yards isn't the worst.

Key Injuries: WR Eric Deslauriers (finger), DB Andrew Lue (hamstring), DE Aaron Lavarias (arm), WR James Rodgers (undisclosed), QB Dan LeFevour (shoulder), QB Jonathan Crompton (shoulder), LB Kyries Hebert (ankle).

Ottawa RedBlacks

  • YDSA/GP

After a couple of impressive weeks to start the year, the RedBlacks cast doubt on those performances by getting steamrolled in Edmonton. Mix in a couple of injuries on defence and the RedBlacks lose ground.

Key Injuries: WR Marcus Henry (undisclosed), DE Justin Capicciotti (undisclosed), MLB Travis Brown (shoulder).

The wolves are at the door for head coach Corey Chamblin, because Saskatchewan is the league's only winless team, and it's not ideal that they are trying to dig out from this hole without their starting quarterback Darian Durant, (or promising young receiver, Ryan Smith) but in the grand scheme of things, losing three games by a total of nine points is an indication that the Riders are better than the standings suggest.

Key Injuries:  WR Ryan Smith (undisclosed), QB Darian Durant (Achilles), ILB Shea Emry (neck)
