The Buffalo Sabres signed defenceman Mattias Samuelsson to a seven-year contract extension worth $30 million on Wednesday.

The deal will carry an average annual value of $4.285 million.

Samuelsson tallied 10 assists in 42 games with the Sabres last season. He also added two goals and 15 points in 22 games with the AHL's Rochester Americans.

A second-round pick of the Sabres in 2018, Samuelsson made his NHL debut during the 2020-21 season, posting two assists in 12 games.

The 22-year-old will play out the final season of his entry-level contract this year before the extension kicks in next season.

Sabres Make Moves Ahead of Season

Samuelsson was the second contract extension announced Wednesday by the Sabres, after head coach Don Granato also inked a new contract.

Granato guided the Sabres to a 32-39-11 record last season as the team missed the playoffs for the 11th straight year. Buffalo went 9-16-3 in their final 28 games of the 2020-21 season after Granato took over behind the bench on an interim basis.

The Sabres will open their regular season on Thursday against the Ottawa Senators.
