Marner next team betting odds: Blackhawks, Hurricanes, Leafs lead the way

After spending nine years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, it appears Mitch Marner is set to test the free agent waters on July 1.

The 28-year-old winger enters the summer fresh off a career-best 102 points in the regular season, bringing his career total to 741 points in 657 regular-season games, and projects to be one of the highest-paid players in the league on the open market.

Chicago Blackhawks +250

Only four teams project to have more cap space entering the off-season than the Chicago Blackhawks, and Marner could be the perfect opportunity to spend some of that.

Chicago enters Year 3 of the Connor Bedard experience next season, and a winger like Marner could be the perfect addition to that locker room as he could share with Bedard the things he did to leap from a 69-point player in 2017-18 to a 94-point player in his third season (2018-19).

Carolina Hurricanes +340

If leaving Toronto but staying in the Eastern Conference is the path for Marner, then perhaps no team makes more sense than the Carolina Hurricanes.

Carolina was back in the Eastern Conference final this season, falling 4-1 to the Florida Panthers and moving to 1-12 in their past 13 Conference Finals games under head coach Rod Brind'Amour.

With Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov and Seth Jarvis all under contract through 2029, and the team holding over $28 million of cap space, the Hurricanes seem to have enough ammo in the money department to back up the Brinks truck for a 100-point guy like Marner.

A return to Toronto can’t fully be ruled out until the ink has been put on paper on a new deal for Marner and the odds reflect that, with the Leafs still sporting the third-best odds in this market.

Leafs GM Brad Treliving spoke on Thursday about the team “needing to change their DNA,” which would appear to be a warning sign to not expect Marner in the Blue and White for seasons to come.

Still, 100-point wingers don’t grow on trees, and while Toronto has struggled to find success win Marner in the postseason, the fact remains the nine years he has been a Maple Leaf have been some of the more successful regular seasons the franchise has ever seen.

It’s also worth noting that this market will be graded on what team Marner signs his next deal with, not the team he plays his next game for.

The idea of a sign and trade has been floated over the past several days, as it would allow Marner to play elsewhere while still securing an eighth year on his deal, and the Maple Leafs would receive an asset while losing their first-line winger.

For that reason alone, the +430 number is interesting.
