Leafs G Murray (ankle) skates, no timetable for return

Published

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray skated Friday for the first time since Jan. 27, but remains without a timetable for his return.

"(Murray's) ankle's still not at the point where it's allowing him to do everything's that required to play goal in terms of his movements," Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said after the team's practice.

The Thunder Bay, Ont., native suffered the ankle injury in warmups ahead of being scheduled to start against his former team, the Ottawa Senators, last month. He last played on Jan. 17 in a 5-4 win over the Florida Panthers. Murray started the game but was pulled after allowing four goals on eight shots. Ilya Samsonov entered in relief and backstopped the Maple Leafs to a come-from-behind win, blanking the Panthers and making 11 saves in the process.

The 28-year-old Murray is 11-5-2 with a 2.73 GAA and .911 save percentage this season. He missed most of October due to an adductor injury suffered in the first game of the season against the Montreal Canadiens.

Samsonov sidelined

While Murray was on the ice Friday, Samsonov was not, sitting out the team's skate with illness.

Keefe said the team's starter against the Montreal Canadiens was to be determined based off Samsonov's status.

The 25-year-old is 19-6-2 in 26 appearances this season, recording a .918 save percentage and 2.31 GAA.

Aside from Murray and Samsonov, the Leafs have had to turn to prospects Erik Kallgren and Joseph Woll at points throughout the season.

Kallgren, 26, has posted a 3-2 record with a 2.67 goals-against-average and a .898 save percentage.

Woll, 24, made his season debut for the Maple Leafs last week against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The AHL All-Star made 36 saves in the Leafs' 4-3 loss.
