Rangers' Garcia voted postseason MVP by New York baseball writers

NEW YORK (AP) — Texas slugger Adolis García won the Babe Ruth award as postseason MVP in a vote by the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

García hit .323 with eight homers and 22 RBIs in 15 games as the Rangers won their first World Series title.

Retiring managers Dusty Baker and Terry Francona and retiring slugger Miguel Cabrera will receive the William J. Slocum/Jack Lang Award for Long and Meritorious Service.

New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole won the Sid Mercer/Dick Young New York Player of the Year Award for going 15-4 with an American League-leading 2.63 ERA and 222 strikeouts. Cole also will receive his first Cy Young Award at the chapter's annual dinner on Jan. 27.

Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor will receive the Joe DiMaggio Toast of the Town Award, and the airtight 1999 Mets infield of John Olerud, Edgardo Alfonzo, Rey Ordóñez and Robin Ventura will get the Willie, Mickey and the Duke Award.

Former Yankees reliever Ramiro Mendoza was voted the Casey Stengel You Could Look It Up Award for in 2004 becoming the first player since Ruth to win the World Series with the Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen, who returned to his job after his wife, Nicole, died of a brain tumor in August 2022, will receive the Arthur and Milton Richman You Gotta Have Heart Award.

Relief pitcher Liam Hendriks, who returned last season following treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, was given the Joan Payson/Shannon Forde Award for Community Service, and reliever Adam Ottavino will get the Ben Epstein/Dan Castellano Good Guy Award.

Now a free agent, Ottavino spent the last two seasons with the Mets.
