Jays DFA Swanson in flurry of roster moves
Erik Swanson's time with the Toronto Blue Jays appears to be at its end.
The team designated the veteran right-hander for assignment on Tuesday.
It was one of several moves made by the team with righty starter Bowden Francis also placed on the 15-day injured list with an impingement in his pitching shoulder and pitchers Paxton Schultz and Justin Bruihl selected in corresponding moves.
Swanson, 31, was in his third season with the team after being acquired in a deal from the Seattle Mariners that saw outfielder Teoscar Hernandez head the other way. He made his season debut on June 1 after dealing with a nerve issue in his shoulder for the first months of the season.
In six appearances, Swanson was 1-0 with a 15.19 earned run average and a WHIP of 2.438 over 5.1 innings of work.
After an impressive 2024 campaign that saw Francis hit the 100-innings pitched mark for the first time and flirt with no-hitters on multiple occasions, the 29-year-old Tallahassee, FL native had taken a step back in this season. Through 14 starts, Francis was 2-8 with a 6.05 ERA and 1.531 WHIP over 64.0 IP.
Schultz, 27, made his big league debut for the Jays this season. He made eight appearances prior to being returned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. He last appeared in a June 8 loss to the Minnesota Twins. Schultz was 0-0 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.245 WHIP over 17.2 IP.
A 27-year-old lefty, Bruihl was signed by the Jays in March. He has 79 games of big league experience over four seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Both Schultz and Bruihl will be active for the team's game on Tuesday night. The Blue Jays (38-33) open a three-game set at Rogers Centre against the Arizona Diamondbacks (36-35).
The Jays currently occupy the second wild-card spot in the American League.
