Washington Capitals defenceman Karl Alzner will miss his second straight game on Wednesday night due to an upper-body injury.

Capitals coach Barry Trotz ruled Alzner out for Game 4 against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday after he was scratched just hours before Game 3.

Nate Schmidt took Alzner's spot in the lineup on Monday and recorded an assist on the game's first goal. Schmidt finished with 16:29 of ice time in the overtime loss.

Alzner had played in 540 consecutive regular season games and 59 straight playoff games before missing Monday's start.

The 28-year-old averaged 19:47 of ice time during the regular season, and averaged 22:35 over the first two playoff games.

He scored three goals and added 10 assists in 82 regular season games.

Schmidt, 25, scored three goals and added 14 assists in 60 games during the regular season.
