Whether it's our Canadian men coming back to beat the Russians at the Summit Series in '72; our men's relay team claiming gold in Atlanta in 1996 or the Canadian women's soccer team defying the odds to capture bronze at the 2012 London Olympics, Canada has produced some memorable international teams that have risen to the occasion.

This summer, a new team of homegorwn athletes will attempt to write their legacy in the record books. Jennifer Abel, Pamela Ware, Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion have their sights set on the top of the podium at the upcoming Pan American Games in Toronto. Abel and Ware will compete in both the solo and synchro 3m springboard competitions, while Benfeito and Filion will challenge for gold in the 10m platform events.

The group has been dubbed the FAB IV, a play on the last names of each of the divers. "It was Meaghan's sister who came up with the FAB concept," said the 27-year old Filion.

"We thought, 'we're four' so we made the (roman numeral) IV look like a W (for Ware)."

The addition of Ware has added a new dimension to the group. For years, Abel enjoyed a great deal of success with long-time partner Emilie Heymans. With Heymans' retirement after a bronze medal performance at the London Olympics, Abel was on the lookout for a new partner. Enter Ware, who admitted she was nervous about trying to fill the shoes of the highly decorated Heymans.

"At first it was really stressful because I didn't know if it was going to work or if I was going to get along with the rest of the team because I was new," admitted the 21-year old. "But when I came in, they were really accepting."

Ware added that the key to success was being able to find their routine.

"We discovered that we were the type of team that liked to play around and sing and dance on the board," she explained. "We like to fool around, but when it's time to be serious, we're serious."

That chemistry paid off immediately, with the newly-formed pair capturing bronze at the FINA World Aquatic Championships in Barcelona in 2013. Despite years of success with Heymans, Abel felt comfortable right away with Ware.

"To be a good partner, you have to be able to adjust yourself to any new situation," she said. "Pam and I can both adjust ourselves and make changes and that's why it is easy to work together."

That chemistry extends beyond their partnerships on the diving boards as the foursome has become inseparable on the road, spending more time with each other than their own families. "The fact is that the four of us are really good friends outside of diving helps," said Benfeito.  "It means that we can compete and spend two weeks together without arguing, it makes us better and it motivates us a lot. It makes us a family."

Also motivating them is the fact that they'll be performing in front of a friendly audience at the Pan Am Games - an opportunity that Ware relishes.

"It will be my first Pan Ams," said Ware.  "For it to be at home, it's very exciting. I think it's going to me more motivation to be better.

"It just gives it so much of a better atmosphere in the pool when they are all cheering for us and seeing the Canada flags in the stands. It's going to be awesome."
