MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact has stated its support for striker Didier Drogba after a report surfaced that his foundation was under investigation by Britain's Charity Commission.

"The club completely supports Didier Drogba in all of his humanitarian work and recognizes his exceptional contribution," the Major League Soccer team said in a statement. "As legal action is currently taken, the club will make no further comment."

Drogba trained with the squad Thursday but did not speak to the media.

The Daily Mail in London reported that the Didier Drogba Foundation had spent only a tiny fraction of the money raised over the last five years in charitable works. It said that out of $3.09 million raised in Britain, only $25,662, less than one per cent, had been spent on good works. It said well over $1 million was sitting unused in an account.

It also said that the foundation had spent $798,738 on lavish fundraising events attended by royalty and celebrities at top London hotels.

It quoted a Charity Commission statement saying the foundation was being investigated for providing "misleading information to donors and the public."

The Daily Mail cautioned that "there is no suggestion of wrongdoing on behalf of any of the supporters of the Didier Drogba Foundation."

Drogba issued a statement saying he would take legal action against the newspaper.

"Despite their claims, there is no fraud, no corruption, no mismanagement, no lies, no impropriety," the statement read.

It said the foundation had 3.7 Euros ($5.35 million) — "funded entirely by me through sponsorships and donations" _ which had gone toward building a hospital in his native Ivory Coast as well as paying for a mobile clinic, a dialysis machine and things like school bags and books for children.

It said the British fund would be used to make the hospital operational by paying for staff, medicines and equipment.

The foundation, established in Ivory Coast in 2007 with a British arm registered in 2009, aims to build hospitals and educate children in the West African country.

Drogba told the BBC: "I'm responsible for this money; I'm not going to spend it just to spend it. I have projects for the long term and I know what I want to do."

The 38-year-old Drogba, one of the world's best-known soccer stars, joined the Impact last summer from London club Chelsea.
