TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays wasted no time putting Matt Dominguez in the starting lineup.

The infielder, called up from the Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday morning, started at third base that night in his Blue Jays debut against the visiting Chicago White Sox.

With reigning American League MVP Josh Donaldson still hampered by a sore left leg after he was hit by a pitch on Saturday, Dominguez filled the void in the field while Donaldson remained in the lineup as the designated hitter.

"I know some guys are banged up and things like that. I'm just here to do whatever they need me to do to win some games," Dominguez said before the game.

"Whatever they ask me to do I'll do. I'm just happy to be here."

Dominguez was claimed off waivers by Toronto from Milwaukee last September. The 26-year-old has a .311 average with two homers and 14 RBIs in 17 games for the Bisons this season.

Manager John Gibbons said he plans on giving Dominguez some playing time at first base in the absence of Chris Colabello, who was suspended for 80 games last Friday after testing positive for a performance-enhanching substance.

"He's a good defender, a real good defender. That will help us out," Gibbons said. "In the past we've really only had three first basemen. Now we've got a guy who can play both sides. That's valuable."

Dominguez, the 12th overall pick by the Marlins in the 2007 draft, has appeared in 357 career MLB games but has never started any of them at first base.

"I think I played three or four games (at first base in Buffalo)," he said. "It's a little different, completely backwards looking at the field. But I just have to remember cut-offs and things like that, that's the biggest key.

"Catching the ball and things like that are fine."

In the corresponding roster move, Toronto optioned right-hander Drew Hutchison to the triple-A club.

Hutchison made a one-off start last weekend to give the Toronto rotation an extra day's rest.

He gave up two runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings in a 6-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

NOTES: Catcher Russell Martin sat out a third straight game with neck spasms but Gibbons doesn't expect Martin to need a stint on the disabled list. The Blue Jays close out their series against the White Sox on Wednesday then have Thursday off before starting a road trip in Tampa Bay.
