LIVERPOOL, England — Liverpool has signed midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle in a deal worth a reported 25 million pounds ($33 million).

After signing a five-year contract, Wijnaldum will now travel to Palo Alto in California to join his new teammates on their tour of the United States.

The 25-year-old Dutchman is manager Juergen Klopp's seventh signing in the summer transfer window, following Loris Karius, Joel Matip, Marko Grujic, Sadio Mane, Ragnar Klavan and Alex Manninger.

Wijnaldum scored 11 goals in 38 league appearances in his first season in England, but is leaving Newcastle following relegation from the Premier League.

Klopp says Wijnaldum "can play a few positions for us and players that come through the Dutch system usually have a good tactical understanding and flexibility."
