Zach Mettenberger was claimed by the San Diego Chargers Tuesday, one day after being a surprise cut by the Tennessee Titans.

Mettenberger will be reunited with Ken Whisenhunt in San Diego; the former Titans head coach is now the Chargers offensive coordinator. Mettenberger showed some promise under Whisenhunt, to the point where there was some thought the team didn’t need to draft a quarterback second overall in 2015, the spot they ultimately selected Marcus Mariota with.

The 2014 sixth-round draft pick finished with 1,412 passing yards and eight touchdowns to seven interceptions in seven games in 2014, but his performance dipped last year, finishing with just 935 passing yards and four touchdowns to seven interceptions.

Mettenberger will compete for backup duties with veteran Kellen Clemens in San Diego, behind entrenched starter Philip Rivers.

According to a report from ESPN, the New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals also put in claims for Mettenberger.
