The MLB free agency period is underway. Teams and players alike are looking to make big splashes during the off-season.

Trumbo headed to the Rockies?

According to MASN's Roch Kubatko, a deal between the Baltimore Orioles and slugger Mark Trumbo is "off the table". Kubatko reports that the Orioles offered Trumbo a four-year deal in the $52-$55 million range and although the length was right, the 30-year-old is looking for something in the $70 million range. Kubatko is not convinced a deal cannot be reached, as a similar situation occurred with first baseman Chris Davis before the team signed him to a seven-year, $161 million contract in 2015. However, the 2016 American League home run leader is garnering interest from many other teams, including the Colarado Rockies. A deal with Trumbo would be feasible as the Rockies already gave up their first round pick when they signed Ian Desmond and would make room for the team to continue shopping outfielder Charlie Blackmon for starting pitching. Trumbo had a career year in 2016 with 47 home runs, 108 RBIs and an .850 OPS.

Mariners shopping Smith?

Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that the Seattle Mariners "show a willingness" to trade outfielder Seth Smith. According to Dutton, the Mariners would be most interested in trading Smith if a trade would land the team starting pitching in return for the 34-year-old. The left-handed batter is valuable against right-handed pitching, batting .256/.351/.431 with 16 home runs against righties last season.

Rays looking at Eovaldi?

According to Marc Tompkin of the Tampa Bay Times, former New York Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi is "among the pitchers being discussed" by the Tampa Bay Rays. However, Eovaldi is likely to miss most of 2017 after undergoing Tommy John and flexor tendon surgeries in August and was released by the Yankees in November. Before his season-ending injury in 2016, the right-hander was 9-8 with a 4.76 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 124.2 innings pitched.
