Here's what you need to know for Wednesday, Feb. 10, the top stories from around the sports world.

Blockbuster:  The Toronto Maple Leafs traded captain Dion Phaneuf to Ottawa on Tuesday in a nine-player deal. The Leafs also sent Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert and Cody Donaghey to the Senators for defenceman Jared Cowen, forwards Colin Greening, Milan Michalek and Tobias Lindberg and a 2017 second-round pick. The Senators will absorb Phaneuf's $7 million salary cap hit for each of the next five years. In their first game without Phaneuf, the Leafs fell 4-3 to the Calgary Flames. Phaneuf could debut tonight for the Senators in Detroit.

The Gesture:  Leafs forward Nazem Kadri made a throat-slash gesture towards Mark Giordano after getting hit by the Flames defenceman. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reports that the league is looking into the incident. Kadri said after the game that he regrets the gesture but also doesn’t remember doing it since he had been hit in the head.

Around the NHL:  In New Jersey, the Devils retired the No. 30 jersey of Martin Brodeur and then went out and beat the Edmonton Oilers 2-1. The Montreal Canadiens won their third in a row by topping the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2. The Winnipeg Jets beat the St. Louis Blues 2-1 in a shootout, and the Canucks got past the Avalanche 3-1.

Before the Commish:  Flames defenceman Dennis Wideman will have his appeal heard by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in New York today at 10am et. Wideman is trying to get a reduction of his 20-game suspension for hitting linesman Don Henderson in a game on Jan. 27.

Signing Season:  CFL free agency opened yesterday and the Ottawa Redblacks picked up former Argos quarterback Trevor Harris. The Blue Bombers signed former Lions running back Andrew Harris, while Ted Laurent and Andy Fantuz re-signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Wiggins Watch:  The Toronto Raptors will try to keep their hot streak going tonight at the expense of Andrew Wiggins and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Toronto has won 14 of 15 and will look for another victory in their final game before this weekend's All-Star festivities on their home court.
