Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton will undergo surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder.

The team announced the news on Tuesday, adding that while Newton will be sidelined for the Panthers' offseason practice program, he is expected to be fully recovered by the start of training camp.

Newton suffered the injury in Week 14 last season against the San Diego Chargers.

“It is well-documented and well-researched that overhead throwing athletes commonly have wear and tear to their rotator cuffs,” Panthers head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said in a team release. “As a result of the MRI, we modified all of Cam’s work in the weight room and on the field for the final three weeks of the season.”

The 2001 first overall pick played in 15 games last season, finishing with 3,509 passing yards and 19 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. Newton added 359 yards and five scores on the ground.

The Panthers also announced defensive end Charles Johnson (back) and wide receiver Damiere Byrd (knee) will also undergo surgical procedures that will sideline them for the Panthers' offseason program, but are both expected back for training camp as well.
