Penguins fly out of the gate in 7-Eleven Power Rankings

The Pittsburgh Penguins have started the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs in this week's 7-Eleven Power Rankings as they ended the 2016 playoffs: as the NHL’s best team.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have started the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs as they ended the 2016 playoffs: as the NHL’s best team.

Pittsburgh is No. 1 in the first 7-Eleven Power playoff rankings, earning top billing on the strength of three straight wins over Columbus. Sidney Crosby’s Penguins are on the threshold of what would be a surprising sweep of the Blue Jackets – considering top goalie Matt Murray has yet to play and top defenceman Kris Letang won’t play again this season.

Meanwhile, Presidents’ Trophy-winning Washington’s run atop the rankings came to a screeching halt; the Capitals dropped to No. 7 after splitting the first two games of their first-round series with Toronto.

The 7-Eleven Power Rankings represent the consensus choices of TSN’s Ray Ferraro, Jeff O’Neill, Jamie McLennan, Craig Button and Darren Dreger.

First-round opponents Nashville and Chicago recorded the biggest moves from the final regular season ranking, virtually switching places. Nashville rose from No. 14 to No. 3 and Chicago plummeted from No. 2 to No. 14 after the Predators outscored the Hawks 6-0 in their first two games.
