BOUCHERVILLE, Que. - Chicoutimi Sagueneens goaltender Storm Phaneuf was handed a nine-game suspension Tuesday for kicking a player in a 3-0 win over the Drummondville Voltigeurs last Sunday.

Phaneuf, who technically received an eight-game ban to go with an additional one-game automatic suspension, was bowled over by Voltigeurs centre Dylan Montcalm after making a save in the third period.

With both players sprawled on the ice, Phaneuf kicked Montcalm in the chest area with his skate blade. Montcalm was injured as a result of the incident, the QMJHL said in a release.

There was no immediate word on how long Montcalm might be out of action.

Phaneuf has a 2-6 record this season with a 3.63 goals-against average.
