MADRID — Brazilian striker Willian Jose and midfielder Xabi Prieto scored a goal in each half as Real Sociedad defeated Leganes 2-0 to provisionally move to within five points of the Spanish league lead on Friday.

Jose opened the scoring for the visitors with a header after a cross by Carlos Martinez in the 29th minute, and Prieto sealed the victory with a right-footed shot from inside the area in the 59th.

It was the second win in a row for Sociedad, which reached sixth place with 16 points from 10 matches. Real Madrid, which plays at Alaves on Saturday, leads with 21 points.

Leganes, which lost its third successive match, remained on 10 points but dropped to 14th place. The recently promoted team is only two points above the relegation zone.

Real Sociedad hosts Atletico Madrid in the next round, while Leganes plays at Real Madrid.
