It appears Jon Cornish may have played his last game in professional football.

According to Ian Busby of the Calgary Herald, the oft-injured running back for the Stampeders may be the latest player to retire due to concussions.

“The decision was made at the end of last season,” Cornish told the Herald. “If I suffered another concussion I would take the same process, allow myself to get fully recovered and then come back to play.

“The problem was when I suffered the concussion, I only had six weeks until the Grey Cup. Could I play in the Grey Cup? I might but it would be unfair to my teammates. I knew I wasn’t going to come back this season.

“I’m comfortable with whatever outcome there is.”

When reached via text by TSN, Cornish said, "... it's not based on football, more so opportunities off the field."

In 2013, Cornish was named the league's Most Outstanding Player. Last season, he missed seven games after getting hit in the head in the season opener. This season, he missed the final nine games after suffering another concussion.

“I don’t have any regrets. It’s not how I roll,” Cornish told the Herald. “I spent most of the start of the season defending my head against people head-butting me. What did that lead into? Breaking my thumb because I had to hit people’s helmets."

Cornish said the team is aware of his decision.

"It’s something I’m very comfortable with," added Cornish. "You gotta control what you can control. In this case, me controlling those things would be removing myself from the football equation.”
