Stampeders remain atop CFL Rankings

The Calgary Stampeders hold off the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for top spot in the TSN.ca CFL Power Rankings, as last year's Grey Cup teams are starting to pull away from the rest of the league.

The Calgary Stampeders hold off the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for top spot in the TSN.ca CFL Power Rankings, as last year's Grey Cup teams are starting to pull away from the rest of the league.

Through the first half of the season, there was a lot of movement in the rankings, particularly in the first spot, four different teams claimed the lead, but now the Stampeders and Ticats -- closely bunched together -- have established a gap.

Falling this week, the Montreal Alouettes slide from five to seven after a miserable home loss to B.C.

Locked down the Eskimos, holding them to two field goals and a single point, with 203 total yards, in a 16-7 win. Not as explosive offensively as some of their more recent victories, but this defending-champion Stampeders team is starting to look like they were supposed to look this year.

Key Injuries: DT Corey Mace (foot), T Dan Federkeil (leg), T Edwin Harrison (leg), RB Jon Cornish (thumb).

Destroyed the Argos in the Labour Day Classic, 42-12, outgainining the Boatmen 504 yards to 243. After a lot of jockeying in the rankings through the first half of the season, the Stampeders and Tiger-Cats have separated from the pack.

Key Injuries: DT Brian Bulcke (knee), DT Linden Gaydosh (Achilles), RB C.J. Gable (elbow), WR Andy Fantuz (arm), DE Eric Norwood (undisclosed), DB Johnny Sears Jr. (undisclosed) and S Mike Daly (undisclosed).

Couldn't get anything going against Calgary, even with QB Mike Reilly returning to action. While Calgary and Hamilton have pulled away from the pack, the Eskimos, with their sturdy defence, are the best of the rest.

Key Injuries: RB John White (Achilles), G Simeon Rottier (knee), WR Shamawd Chambers (knee), G Greg Wojt (concussion).

Toronto Argonauts

Getting outscored 80-27 in the past two weeks, against Edmonton and Hamilton, the Argos are looking like pretenders when they run into the better teams in the league.

Key Injuries: QB Ricky Ray (shoulder), SB Andre Durie (knee).

Ottawa RedBlacks

On their bye week, the Ottawa RedBlacks didn't lose, which worked in their favour because they gained ground on Montreal after the Alouettes' loss to B.C.

Key Injuries: WR Marcus Henry (undisclosed), MLB Travis Brown (shoulder).

B.C. Lions

Despite losing QB Travis Lulay to a knee injury, the Lions took care of business at Montreal, with John Beck performing adequately (14-for-222, 114 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT) coming off the bench.

Key Injuries:  QB Travis Lulay (knee).

It's just about impossible to win when your quarterback turns the ball over six times, as Tanner Marsh did against B.C. (who have the league's worst defence in terms of yards against), and while the Alouettes have to be frustrated by that performance, what kind of reasonable expectations does on put on a fourth-string quarterback?

Key Injuries: DE Aaron Lavarias (arm), WR James Rodgers (undisclosed), QB Dan LeFevour (shoulder), QB Jonathan Crompton (shoulder), LB Bear Woods (pectoral), QB Rakeem Cato (hip).

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Outscored 73-27 in the past two weeks, the Bombers are sinking and while QB Brian Brohm was accurate (21-for-26) at Saskatchewan, that he threw for only 184 yards might indicate a rather conservative approach for a team that lost by 18.

Key Injuries:  QB Drew Willy (knee), RB Paris Cotton (arm), WR Darvin Adams (upper body).

It's a new era in Riderville! Well, let's not go overboard after one win, but it's a good start for interim head coach Bob Dyce. I've been saying all year that the Riders are better than their record (because how could they be worse?), but it will be interesting to see if this gets them going.

Key Injuries:  QB Darian Durant (Achilles), ILB Shea Emry (neck), QB Kevin Glenn (shoulder), SB Chris Getzlaf (lower body).
