The World Curling Tour stayed in Canada this past weekend with familiar names on both the men and women sides picking up victories.

 

Men’s Tour

Dave Jones Mayflower Cashspiel from Halifax, NS (Nov 19-22)

Purse: $27, 400

Brad Gushue and his foursome from St. John’s, NL can’t stop winning curling events. Gushue, along with third Mark Nichols, second Brett Gallant and lead Geoff Walker won their sixth tournament this season, capturing the Dave Jones Mayflower Cashspiel from Halifax.

They went a perfect 6-0 over the four day event, beating the likes of Ian Fitzner-Leblanc, 7-5, in the quarterfinals, Chad Stevens, 7-1, in the semifinals and finally Switzerland’s Sven Michel, 7-3, in the championship game.

The large 24-rink field featured teams mostly from the Maritime provinces, including PEI’s Adam Casey, who failed to make the playoff round.

With the victory the 35-year-old widens his lead on the WCT money list as well as the CTRS rankings. Gushue and company are in fine form as they prepare for the 2015 Home Hardware Canada Cup, starting December 2 from Grande Prairie, AB.

DEKALB Superspiel from Morris, MB (Nov 19-23)

Purse: $45, 000

Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers picked up his first victory on the WCT this season by beating Calgary’s Charley Thomas in the final, 6-2.

The defending Manitoba champions went 8-1 over the four-day event and beat fellow Winnipegger Mike McEwen, 6-5, in the quarters, Dennis Bohn, 6-4, in the semis and Thomas in the final.

The field featured 32-rinks.

Wall Grain Mixed Doubles Classics from Oshawa, ON (Nov 13-17)

Husband and wife, Mike and Dawn McEwen won the first ever Mixed Doubles Classic by beating Lisa Weagle (lead for Rachel Homan) and John Epping, 6-4.

Elite level curlers are still trying to figure out mixed doubles as it will makes its Olympic debut in 2018 in South Korea.

Women’s Tour

DEKALB Superspiel from Morris, MB (Nov 19-23)

Purse: $40, 000

Olympic champion Jennifer Jones captured her first victory of the WCT season, beating the American rink led by Erika Brown in the final, 8-4.

The Winnipeg rink of skip Jones, third Kaitlyn Lawes, second Jill Officer and lead Dawn McEwen went a perfect 7-0 over the four day event. Team Jones beat the likes of Darcy Robertson in the quarters, 9-5, Barb Spencer, 6-1, in the semis and Brown in the final. This was a good time for their first win of the season as the Canada Cup is just around the corner.

The 32-rink field featured the likes of Sherry Anderson (2-3, failed to make playoffs), Kerri Einarson (1-3, failed to make playoffs), Allison Flaxey (6-2, lost in semis to Brown) and Kristy McDonald (3-3, failed to make playoffs).

Jill Brothers won her first event of the season, winning in her hometown of Halifax this past weekend. Brothers beat fellow native of Halifax, 9-5, in the final.
