Ottawa at Edmonton

The Redblacks have been the most pleasant surprise of the season so far, picking up as many wins after Week 2 as they did all of last season's 2-16 debut.

The off-season plan to improve the receiving corps has paid big dividends early. Veteran quarterback Henry Burris is completing 70 per cent of his passes and keeping defences honest. And when Ernest Jackson isn't catching touchdowns, Chevon Walker is providing a solid running attack to take the pressure off the passing game.

The Eskimos are coming off a bye after dropping the season opener to the Argonauts in Fort McMurray. They also lost starter Mike Reilly for 10-12 weeks with a serious knee injury. However, Matt Nichols is not your average backup quarterback. The fifth-year pivot has started for the Eskimos before but battled injuries himself. But he knows the offence and the personnel and has had an extra week to prepare.

With the Eskimos back at Commonwealth Stadium for the first time this season as well as Kenny Stafford and Adarius Bowman at his disposal, I like the Eskimos to give their fans something to cheer about.

Edmonton wins their home opener

Montreal at Winnipeg

This is the story of two quarterbacks: rookie sensation Rakeem Cato and banged up Drew Willy.

Cato was called upon to start last week after Jonathan Crompton and Dan LeFevour went down with injuries in the season opener. And he didn't disappoint, going 20-for-25 for 241 yards and three touchdowns.

Willy is expected to start for the Blue Bombers, despite leaving last week's game looking woozy. If he can go, he'll be facing a tough Alouettes' defence that has given up just 31 points in two games.

The Bombers are coming off an embarrassing loss to the Tiger-Cats. Nick Moore and Paris Cotton have led the way offensively for Winnipeg but the defence has had a trouble keeping opponents out of the end zone.

Tyrell Sutton leads the league in rushing, making for a dangerous combination with Cato on offence.

Can Kevin Glenn keep it up? The veteran quarterback made his first start this year in Week 2 after Darian Durant went down for the season with a ruptured achilles. He responded with 477 yards and two touchdowns in an overtime loss to the Argonauts.

However, his No. 1 target will not be in the lineup this week. Ryan Smith, who caught eight balls for 174 yards and one major last week, is out as is linebacker Shea Emry.

The Lions looked out of sync against the upstart Redblacks in Ottawa last week. After a bye in Week 1, quarterback Travis Lulay showed some rust after missing the the final two months of last season with a shoulder injury. Running back Andrew Harris had trouble finding his stride as well, picking up 48 yards.

Does Glenn keep it rolling? Does Lulay find his groove?

Roughriders pick up a big road win

Toronto at Calgary

The Argonauts have been nomads this season and it seems to be working. With wins over the Eskimos in Fort McMurray and the Roughriders in Regina, the travelling road show moves to Calgary.

Trevor Harris is among the leaders in passing, stepping up in the absence of Ricky Ray. Chad Owens is among the leaders in receiving and Alouettes cast-off Brandon Whitaker is among the leaders in rushing. However, the loss of Andre Durie will hurt.

The Stampeders have looked like anything but defending Grey Cup champions. They escaped with a win over the Tiger-Cats in their home opener and then looked lacklustre in a loss to the Alouettes last week.

All logic points to an Argonauts win. But sometimes logic takes a back seat to teams being due. And I think the Stampeders are due for a solid effort and the Argonauts are due for a road loss.
