Fantasy NBA daily notes - The 2021-22 tip off edition

With the return of the NBA marathon -- and the first 82-game regular season in years -- this daily series is back in action, as well. Each weekday during the regular season we dissect the league through a fantasy basketball lens; seeking to extract value from seemingly small shifts in rotations with a keen eye on identifying meaningful and actionable statistical trends.

NBA Futures: 2021-22 NBA awards predictions

Arenas will be operating at full capacity this season, but it feels like the league is in a transition period where previous MVP locks like LeBron and Steph Curry are opening the door for younger stars to establish themselves as the future of the NBA. Below are our five main player awards, splitting the safe picks from the value plays.

NBA Futures: The 2020-21 NBA Champ is coming from the East

With three potential first-round sweeps on the horizon, Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Milwaukee are flexing their muscles as legitimate championship contenders. One week into the playoffs, the Eastern Conference’s big three have demonstrated they’re in a class of their own and the odds to win the conference reflect that.

Setting The Pick: 2020-21 fantasy basketball awards

After the most unpredictable basketball season in recent memory, fantasy managers unsurprisingly missed the mark trying to draft this year’s 10 best players. Without further ado, here are my fantasy basketball awards for 2020-21.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - The biggest surprises of the season

Welcome to the final weekend of the NBA marathon. Hopefully, you've enjoyed the long and winding season, even if it was a uniquely challenging campaign. While we can't all win our fantasy hoops leagues, we can still appreciate the rewards of the grind -- the intimate knowledge of lineups and rotations, the identification of new rising talents, and the appreciation of value on every NBA roster.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Is Horton-Tucker playing himself out of LA?

The Los Angeles Lakers' duo of Kyle Kuzma and Talen Horton-Tucker helped deliver a close win over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday evening. Kuzma produced a full line and flirted with a triple-double, while Horton-Tucker has produced at least 10 assists in consecutive games for the first in his career.

Setting The Pick: Three key fantasy lessons from 2020-21

Even though this NBA season was filled with numerous once-in-a-lifetime circumstances, some key lessons can still be extracted to better our chances for the 2021-22 fantasy basketball season. Here are three observations worth thinking about.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Getting the max from Mo Bamba

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Getting the max from Mo Bamba

It's time for fantasy managers to get on the tank. The Orlando Magic conducted a fire sale at the deadline, which has led to improved roles for the likes of Mo Bamba and R.J. Hampton. Just last night, Bamba produced 19 points and 15 rebounds, good for his second straight game with at least 15 and 15 after posting zero such games in his career prior to the past two outings.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Cole Anthony's magic touch

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Cole Anthony's magic touch

Apparently, the Orlando Magic's Cole Anthony knows how to do clutch. On Saturday night, the point guard drilled a go-ahead 3-pointer with just one-tenth of a second remaining on the clock against the Grizzlies. The shot gave Anthony his second go-ahead 3-pointer in the final second of a game this season.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Kevin Porter Jr. makes history

How high will Kevin Porter Jr. go in 2021 fantasy basketball drafts? On Thursday evening in an upset over the Milwaukee Bucks, the Houston Rockets' second-year wing became just the fourth player in NBA history to score 50 points in a game before reaching the age of 21, joining Devin Booker, Brandon Jennings and LeBron James.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Cavaliers backcourt growing in value

There's something about second-year guards in the second half of the season for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Last year, it was Collin Sexton who made a massive leap in scoring output and efficiency for Cleveland in the late stages of an abbreviated season. This season, Darius Garland is replicating Sexton's second-half sophomore breakout, including his 25 points and 10 dimes last night in a loss to the Orlando Magic.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Can you see the value in Brissett?

What an April for Oshae Brissett! The Indiana Pacers forward signed a 10-day deal with the team on the first day of the month. Last week, he secured a multi-year deal with the team. With Domantas Sabonis still sidelined by a lower back issue last night, Brissett continued to produce big numbers for the Pacers, chipping in a stellar double-double performance that included 18 points and five blocks.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Rockets forced to revamp rotation

The biggest fantasy news from a busy Monday slate in the NBA might just be that Houston Rockets point guard John Wall will likely miss the remainder of the season with a right hamstring strain. We're at the point of the season when ailing stars such as Wall are often shut down, placing the onus on fantasy managers to react quickly and adapt to new-look NBA rotations.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Get an edge with specialists like Jakob Poeltl

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Get an edge with specialists like Jakob Poeltl

Jakob Poeltl made just three shots on Saturday night for the San Antonio Spurs but still turned in a stellar fantasy performance. The path to value for Poeltl is found on the other side of the floor, as the elite rim protector swatted a game-high five shots in the Spurs' clutch win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

Setting The Pick: Fantasy basketball playoff primer

Setting The Pick: Fantasy basketball playoff primer

Throw big-picture strategy, brand name credibility and preseason rankings out the door. It’s all about ‘what have you done for me lately’ from here on out. Last week I highlighted three key factors to consider for the playoffs and those principles ring true again this week.

Fab’s Five: Streaming options for the fantasy basketball playoffs

Playoffs are either in full swing or are beginning for fantasy GMs this week. Survival is the name of the game – big names don't matter anymore if they're not producing. It's all about "What have you done for me lately?" If the answer is "not much,” then it's time to move on from almost anyone.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Dort is back on the radar

It's time to have the Luguentz Dort discussion. Again. The Oklahoma City Thunder's dynamic two-way wing scored 29 points in a loss to the Toronto Raptors on Sunday. Dort delivered 21 points in the first quarter while hitting all seven of his shots from the floor, becoming just the fourth player in franchise history with at least 20 points without a missed field goal in a given quarter.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Curry is hotter than ever

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Curry is hotter than ever

Stephen Curry is chasing both the real and fantasy MVP awards, scoring 42 points -- and draining 11 3-pointers -- as his Golden State Warriors downed the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. Curry has made a whopping 29 3-pointers over his last three games, good for the most ever over any three-game span in NBA history.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Who will fill Murray's void?

Fantasy managers must assess the repercussions of the Denver Nuggets losing star guard Jamal Murray to a serious knee injury for the remainder of the season. Does dazzling passer Facundo Campazzo vault into a vital distribution role for Denver? Will heady point guard Monte Morris rise to statistical relevance?

Setting the Pick: Three playoff-specific tactics

We are in do-or-die season. Whether you’re already in a playoff matchup or wrapping up the final week of the regular season, be prepared to make some tough decisions.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Houston, we have some promise

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Houston, we have some promise

Kevin Porter Jr. has become a statistical star for the Houston Rockets. The team has won just three of its last 33 games, including yesterday's loss to the Phoenix Suns, but at least Houston's second-year talent became the youngest player in franchise history to produce 14 assists in a game.

Fab’s Five: Streaming options for the fantasy playoffs

Fab’s Five: Streaming options for the fantasy playoffs

The playoffs have arrived in many fantasy leagues. If you made it, good luck this week! For me, this is where strategy can change in category-based leagues. The regular season boils down to trying to win as many cats as possible, whereas in the playoffs you just need to skim by. That's not to say unnecessarily punting categories is recommended, but it's advantageous to pay less attention to the ones you already struggle with.

Fantasy basketball - How Bertans, Monk and Bitadze could win your league

The endgame is available in myriad flavors. Fantasy playoffs. Season-long roto battles that can come down to a single foul shot. Whatever your flavor, right now, you're looking for a boost. And that boost is most likely to arrive when quality meets opportunity. When a player who has been packing in production in limited minutes is suddenly given a larger role.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - Pacers trying to stay ahead in playoff chase

On Wednesday, the Indiana Pacers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 141-137, in the process scoring more points in any game since 2010. Indiana was missing both All-Star Domantas Sabonis and key playmaker Malcolm Brogdon to injury, leaving backup point guard T.J. McConnell to run the show.

Fantasy NBA Daily Notes - James Johnson making the most of his minutes

Would you be interested in a fantasy basketball free agent providing efficient scoring and elite defensive production? There's a 34-year-old forward for the New Orleans Pelicans you might want to meet. After swatting three shots last night, James Johnson is averaging 2.5 blocks to go with 14.8 PPG in four appearances with the Pelicans.
