Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Newhook will miss approximately 10 to 12 weeks with a high ankle sprain, it was announced Saturday morning.
Newhook sustained the injury in a game Thursday night against the Florida Panthers when he crashed awkwardly into the net in the third period. He was helped off the ice and had trouble putting any weight on his left leg.
Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis is loading up a top line in Newhooks' absence, TSN's Kenzie Lalonde reports.
"A lot of guys are going right now so it allows me to load a line," St. Louis said ahead of Saturday's matchup with the Detroit Red Wings.
Defenceman Arber Xhekaj, who last played on Nov. 16 due to an upper-body injury, took part in morning skate.
David Savard skated alone before practice. The defenceman is working his way back from a fractured hand sustained in late October.
