Every NHL season brings new opportunity for teams and players. With training camps beginning, here's a list of 10 young players I'm excited to watch as they try to make their mark as professionals.

You will notice immediately that Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel are not on the list. It goes without saying that the excitement in Edmonton, Buffalo and league-wide to watch these two young generational players is similar to 2005 when Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin were beginning a new era in the NHL. Their absence allows me to add two players who wouldn't otherwise be on the list.

Artemi Panarin (LW/RW) – Chicago Blackhawks
A much-sought-after free agent, the Hawks added a highly skilled forward who is productive, competitive and versatile. A perfect fit for Joel Quenneville and his tendency to move players around the lineup.

Sam Bennett (C) – Calgary Flames
Sam showed in the playoffs why Flames' fans are so excited. His combination of skill and fire can change a game. His emergence sets up Calgary for years to come at the centre ice position alongside Sean Monahan.

Max Domi (LW) – Arizona Coyotes
Max dominated the OHL and the World Junior Championships last season. Already an exciting combination of sense and skill, his development as a leader in his final junior season will pay dividends for the Coyotes for years to come.

Nikolaj Ehlers (RW) – Winnipeg Jets
He is not the Finnish Flash, but this dashing Dane will excite Jets' fans in similar fashion. His skills are sublime and, with a creative flair and determination, he can make significant contributions in a game

William Nylander (LW/C) – Toronto Maple Leafs
His adjustment to the AHL last season signified things to come in the NHL. While he will attempt a move to centre, his skills, creativity, poise and ability to create offence is a welcome addition for the Leafs.

Dylan Larkin (C) – Detroit Red Wings
Detroit GM Ken Holland preaches patience with prospects, but a player like Larkin can force a change of thinking. He's fast and can disrupt opponents with his speed. His competiveness is great and he doesn't take a back seat at any time.

Oliver Bjorkstrand (RW) – Columbus Blue Jackets
The MVP in the WHL last season, Bjorkstrand can excel in every situation of the game. He's an excellent goal scorer who can make plays and keep defenders on their heels. A potential Winterhawks combination of he and Ryan Johansen in Columbus could be scary for opponents.

Kevin Fiala (C) – Nashville Predators
Fiala is a skilled, determined player who simply won't be denied. He stands up to the challenges and is always in the guts of the action. Fiala is offensively dangerous with a burning fire to excel.

Daniel Carr (LW) – Montreal Canadiens
A college free agent, Carr was a strong player in the AHL last season. He's smart, skilled and competitive, and brings a very mature and complete approach to the game. With Alex Galchenyuk moving to centre, this is a capable replacement on the left side.

Ryan Pulock (D) – NY Islanders
His shot stands out and it has drawn comparisons to Al MacInnis but he has developed so much more of his game. Quicker in his play and more rounded defensively, he can add a lot to an already formidable blueline.
