BOSTON – The Blue Jays announced following Monday's 6-5 loss to the Red Sox that shortstop Jose Reyes had been placed on the 15-disabled list.

The 31-year-old has been playing with a cracked rib and a slight muscle strain in his left side, suffered on a swing in the first inning of Toronto's April 10 game in Baltimore.

Reyes continued on as usual for about a week post-injury but then was forced to miss a weekend home series against the Atlanta Braves.

He said he wasn't affected in the field; only when he hit left-handed. When Reyes returned a week ago Tuesday night, the switch-hitter was hitting exclusively right-handed. Doing so he struggled against right-handed pitching, getting just three singles in 19 at-bats. He struck out five times.

The club announced it would purchase the contract of Jonathan Diaz, who will join the Blue Jays in time for Tuesday's game.

Diaz is, effectively, the right-handed hitting version of Ryan Goins. Both are elite defenders.

While manager John Gibbons hasn't revealed his plan, it would be safe to assume Goins and Diaz will platoon at shortstop in Reyes' absence, Goins starting against right-handed pitching and Diaz against left-handers.
