TALLINN, Estonia - Canadian skips Braden Calvert and Kelsey Rocque opened the world junior curling championships on a winning note Saturday.

Calvert, of Winnipeg, captured an 8-3 win victory over Norway, which beat Canada 7-5 to capture the bronze medal in last year's event.

Rocque, of Edmonton, earned an 8--1 win over the Czech Republic in the women's competition.

Calvert's rink took control of its match with Norway with four in the fourth to take a 5-1 advantage. The Norwegians did score two in the seventh to put their deficit to 8-3 but that's as close as they'd come.

"We definitely had (Norway) pegged as a top-three team," said Calvert. "We knew to beat them would be pretty huge and came out in our first game and we played pretty steady.

"Not great, but steady."

In the women's contest, Canada stole one in the eighth and three in the ninth to seal its victory. Rocque won gold with a different lineup last year in Switzerland and had some words of wisdom for her teammates.

"I tried to tell them a few things about coming to a national championship — don't take it too seriously and just have fun," she said. "You never know when you'll be back."

On Sunday, the Canadian men face Russia and the United States. In women's action, Rocque's rink takes on the Americans.
