The Carolina Hurricanes placed goaltender Cam Ward on injured reserve Wednesday with a concussion.

The team recalled goaltender Daniel Altshuller from the AHL's Charlotte Checkers to back up Eddie Lack while Ward is out.

Ward has not played since the Hurricanes overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks on January 15. Ward played the entire game, allowing three goals on 22 shots.

The Hurricanes did not announce the move as retroactive.

The 31-year-old owns a 14-11-5 record in 32 games this season with a .905 save percentage and a 2.41 goals against average.

Altshuller has never played in an NHL game since being selected by the Hurricanes in the third round of the 2012 draft. He owns a 9-1-1 record in the AHL this season with a 1.71 GAA and a .941 save percentage.

Ward is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
