Matthew Wuest, the former Metro Halifax sports reporter and CapGeek founder, died Thursday following a two-and-a-half year battle with colon cancer.

Wuest covered local sports such as the Halifax Mooseheads, Halifax Rainmen and Atlantic University Sport for his full-time job with Metro before CapGeek became a fixture of the hockey industry.

CapGeek tracked the salaries of NHL players and the impact they had on the salary caps of their teams. The site closed earlier this year with Wuest's health in decline.

"He was just a great guy who really loved what he did," Metro Halifax managing editor Philip Croucher said Thursday. "I've never seen anyone do it better."
