Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons says he expects third baseman Josh Donaldson to play in the Home Opener Friday night against the Boston Red Sox after the MVP left Wednesday's game with a calf strain.

The 30-year-old Donaldson left in the seventh inning of Wednesday's loss to the Tampa Bay Rays after straining his right calf during a swing.

“One, I didn’t feel like I was able to play defence the way I wanted to, and two, if I had to try to run or something it was pretty difficult,” said Donaldson after the game. “We don’t think it’s too serious and hopefully I’ll be back before our next game.”

Donaldson already has two homers on the season.

Gibbons is hopeful outfielder Michael Saunders, who is battling through a hamstring injury, will be back in the lineup as well.
