Leon Draisaitl is heading to the world hockey championship.

Draisaitl is set to fly to Germany on Friday and the team hopes to have him in the lineup Saturday against Italy.

Earlier on Thursday, Team Germany head coach Marco Sturm said Thursday Draisaitl would most likely be joining, but it was not yet official as the two sides work through insurance. 

Draisaitl, who was eliminated along with the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 on Wednesday night, is from Cologne, Germany, where the tournament is taking place.

The 21-year-old scored six goals and added 10 assists in 13 playoff games with the Oilers. He scored 29 goals and posted 77 points in 82 games during the regular season.

Germany currently sits fourth in Group A with 5 points - one win, one OT win and two losses. The team has three games remaining in the preliminary round, the first of which will be played Friday against Denmark.

Calling on Grubauer

Germany has also reached out to Washington Capitals goaltender Philipp Grubauer about playing at the worlds.

The team is in desperate need of goaltending help after Thomas Greiss sustained an upper-body injury ahead of Wednesday's game against Slovakia. He started Wednesday's game was forced to exit after allowing a goal in the first period. Germany won the game, 3-2.

Grubauer posted a 13-6-2 on the regular season with a sparkling .926 save percentage and a 2.04 goals against average and three shutouts.

He appeared in relief of Braden Holtby in Game 2 of the Capitals' second-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, allowing two goals on nine shots in the third period.
