Former champions Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and three-time runner-up Andy Murray were among Monday's opening- round winners at the Australian Open.

The second-seeded former world No. 1 Federer handled Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4, 6-2, 7-5, while the third-seeded former top-ranked star Nadal whipped Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 at Melbourne Park.

The 17-time Grand Slam king Federer is a four-time Aussie Open winner and was also a runner-up to Nadal in 2009, the year Nadal claimed his lone championship in Melbourne, where the Spaniard, himself, was also a runner-up in 2012 and last year.

Federer hasn't titled here since 2010, while Nadal was stunned by Stan Wawrinka in last year's Aussie finale.

Federer's second-round opponent will be Italian Simone Bolelli.

A finalist in his last two trips to Melbourne, the 14-time major titlist Nadal played just his second match of 2015 on Monday. He lost in the first round in Doha two weeks ago, coming off a lengthy layoff thanks to a series of physical problems, including a wrist injury.

"At the end you know that you are not going to be at your 100 percent, so the most important thing when you are coming back is accept all the challenges, the weeks, months, that you didn't have the chance to be able to practice, to compete," said Nadal, who also had surgery late last season to remove his appendix. "Just accept every situation. Accept that you're going to be a little slow, a little out of rhythm."

Up next for Nadal will be American Tim Smyczek.

The sixth-seeded Murray took care of India's Yuki Bhambri 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). The two-time Grand Slam champion Murray reached Aussie finals in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Murray's second-round opponent will be Aussie Marinko Matosevic.

No. 7 seed Tomas Berdych beat Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, while 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov whipped German Dustin Brown 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 and upstart Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis upset 11th-seeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis 5-7, 6-0, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 8-6.

Fourteenth-seeded South African Kevin defeated Argentine Diego Schwartzman 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, while 15th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo was ahead 3-2 in the first set against Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin before retiring from the match.

In some other action involving seeds, No. 20 Belgian David Goffin topped American Michael Russell 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-0; No. 22 German Philipp Kohlschreiber drilled Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-2, 6-1; No. 23 Croat Ivo Karlovic mauled Belgian Ruben Bemelmans 6-4, 6-2, 6-4; and No. 24 Frenchman Richard Gasquet dismissed Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-1, 6-3, 6-1.

Other seeded victors on opening day were No. 26 Argentine Leonardo Mayer, No. 28 Czech Lukas Rosol, No. 29 Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, and No. 32 Slovak Martin Klizan.

Also moving on were former Aussie runner-up Marcos Baghdatis and Aussies Nick Kyrgios, Bernard Tomic, Sam Groth and James Duckworth.

On Tuesday, first-round matches will come for world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and the reigning Aussie champ Stan Wawrinka. Djokovic will take on Slovenian Aljaz Bedene, while Wawrinka will meet Turk Marsel Ilhan.

The seven-time major titlist Djokovic is the reigning Wimbledon champion who has captured four Aussie Open crowns, while Wawrinka is seeking a second straight title in Melbourne.

Also on the Day 2 schedule are fifth-seeded U.S. Open runner-up Kei Nishikori, eighth-seeded Canadian slugger Milos Raonic and ninth-seeded former Roland Garros runner-up David Ferrer.
