CALGARY — Sean Monahan inked a seven-year contract extension with the Calgary Flames worth a reported US$44.1 million on Friday morning.

The 21-year-old is coming off a career-best 63 point season, while adding 20-plus goals for the third straight campaign to start his NHL career. The deal will have a $6.3 million annual cap hit.

Twenty-three-old Johnny Gaudreau, meanwhile, remains unsigned.

The sixth overall pick of the 2013 draft, Monahan has quickly established himself as a precocious two-way force for the Flames.

He scored 22 goals as a 19-year-old rookie during the 2013-14 season before exploding for a career-high 31 goals and 62 points as a sophomore. The Brampton, Ont., native maintained that level of production with 27 goals last year, mostly alongside Gaudreau, adding a career-best 36 assists and 20 power-play points.

Monahan has produced more goals (80) and points (159) in the NHL to date than any player from his draft year, topping No. 1 pick Nathan Mackinnon (59 goals and 153 points) as well as Florida Panthers young star Aleksander Barkov (52, 119).

Monahan, who turns 22 in October, will represent Team North America at the World Cup of Hockey in Toronto next month.

The Monahan deal is just the latest transaction in a busy Flames off-season. Calgary hired Glen Gulutzan as new head coach, traded for a new No. 1 goaltender in Brian Elliott, drafted Matthew Tkachuk with the sixth overall pick and signed veteran Troy Brouwer to a rich four-year deal in free agency.

Gaudreau remains the last domino to fall.

The American winger had a career-high 30 goals and 78 points in only his second NHL season, the latter tied for sixth in the NHL scoring race. He'll join Monahan on the North American squad at the World Cup.
