The Carolina Hurricanes said on Monday that forward Jeff Skinner suffered a concussion during Sunday's preseason game against the Washington Capitals.

The team said in a statement that Skinner was hurt when he was hit by Capitals defenceman Matt Niskanen. They did not say how long the 22-year-old would be out.

"Jeff has been diagnosed with a concussion," said Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis. "He will continue to be monitored by our team doctors and go through proper protocols in the coming days."

Skinner had 33 goals and 21 assists in 71 games for Carolina last season.

Carolina opens the regular season on Friday at home against the New York Islanders.
