Minnesota Twins starter Ervin Santana outdueled Sonny Gray of the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night in a two-hit, complete-game shutout and Toronto Blue Jays scouts were there to watch.

The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports that the Jays were among a number of teams to have scouts on hand at Target Field. The Baltimore Orioles, Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals and the World Series champion Kansas City Royals also had representatives in attendance to watch the matchup between two pitchers who could have new homes come August 1's non-waiver trade deadline.

Gray, 26, is under team control for three more seasons and there isn't necessarily an impetus for the A's to move the man who finished third in American League Cy Young voting a year ago.

The return in any potential Gray trade would likely be a substantial one, which could preclude the Blue Jays from getting involved in any negotiations. With last summer's trades for Troy Tulowitzki and David Price, the Jays might no longer have the number top-shelf prospects for such a transaction and would be loath to move the ones who still remain. That said, the A's are very familiar with the Jays' system after the teams came together on the Josh Donaldson trade in November of 2014, but another deal between the two clubs remains unlikely.

Law: Handling pitching staff’s workload key for Blue Jays

ESPN Baseball Tonight's Keith Law joins Cauz and Taylor on Game Day to discuss the Jays pitching rotation and the difference in Aaron Sanchez's game this year.

In 16 starts this season, Gray is 3-8 (0-7 in his last 12 starts) with a 5.16 earned run average and a WHIP of 1.467 over 90.2 inning pitched. He's struck out 72 batters and issued 34 walks. Gray is arbitration eligible in the offseason and will be in line for a significant raise from the $527,500 he currently earns.

Santana, 33, is in the second year of a four-year, $55 million pact. He's the second-highest paid player on the Twins behind Joe Mauer.

In 16 starts, he's 3-7 with a .406 ERA and a WHIP of 1.290 over 93 innings pitched. Santana has fanned 68 and walked 26. He was suspended for 80 games a season ago for a performance-enhancing drug violation.
