Ryan Goins appears to have lost his role as the Toronto Blue Jays’ everyday second baseman.

Speaking prior to the team’s matchup against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said the team would platoon the infield spot with Darwin Barney and Goins.

“We’re going to give [Barney] a little more playing time, and we’ll see how that goes,” Gibbons said. “Barney’s being swinging it good. You know, we’re trying to generate some offence. Maybe that’s one spot we could do it with.”

Goins went 0-for-4 in the Jays’ 2-1 series-opening loss to the Rangers on Monday night. He has just two hits in his past 21 at-bats and is hitting .160 on the season. The 28-year-old held a .250 average last season.

Barney, 30, has shown better in limited appearances this season. He is hitting .310 through 29 at-bats this season with a .375 on-base percentage – Goins’ OBP sits at .200.

Barney will get the start over Goins on Tuesday. He is batting ninth.

The Blue Jays have struggled to produce offensively through the first month of the season and sit 13th in runs scored with 106. In 2015, the Blue Jays led the majors in runs scored with 127 more than the next-best New York Yankees.

The Blue Jays could receive some hitting help from the position once Devon Travis returns from shoulder surgery. Travis hit .304 with eight homers and 35 RBI in 217 at-bats last season. Travis took part in an extended spring training game last week.
