Roberto Luongo started Tuesday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs but took a shot off his right shoulder late in the first period. He finished the period with the Panthers leading 1-0 but did not return for the second.

One of the Panthers' doctors drove Luongo to a local hospital and underwent a CT scan. Upon his return to the arena, Luongo heard the Leafs had tied the game, 2-2 early in the third period and back-up Montoya has been injured on the goal.

In the aftermath of last week's game of musical chairs played by the Panthers goalies, Luongo told George Richards of the Miami Herald how the night progressed for him.

Luongo, who was given a shot to calm the pain in his shoulder, then checked his Twitter account (@strombone1) to get the latest updates when he read that forwards Derek MacKenzie and Scottie Upshall were options to replace Montoya, who was visibly hobbling in the Panthers' net.

Luongo then told the doctor to 'step on it', knowing that his legs were still healthy and he could rescue Montoya, who surrendered the eventual game-winning goal five minutes later.

Luongo told Richards that he didn't remember what kind of car the doctor was driving that night, only that it "wasn't that fast."

When he walked into the locker room, he saw the look on the face of Panthers' goaltending coach Robb Tallas, who was the next option to take over the crease, and got dressed quick.

Luongo, who stopped all 19 shots he faced in two stints, returned to the game but the Panthers dropped a 3-2 decision in one of the more bizarre games this season.
