Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier has been sent down to the AHL's Toronto Marlies for a 10-day conditioning stint, the team announced Wednesday.
The 27-year-old has struggled all season long, posting an 0-8-1 record with a 3.28 GAA and a .888 save percentage. James Reimer has played most of the games between the pipes for the Leafs. Rookie Garret Sparks started instead of Bernier for an injured Reimer Monday night against the Edmonton Oilers and picked up a shutout in his first career start.
Bernier is in the first year of a two-year, $8.3 million contract. This is his third season in Toronto after spending the first four years of his career with the Los Angeles Kings as a backup.
