Auston Matthews was unable to record a point as the United States fell to Slovakia 3-2 in overtime while Finland's Patrik Laine took a questionable trip from Corey Perry of Canada in their last game of the preliminary round at the world hockey championships Tuesday from Russia.

In 16:17 of ice time, the 18-year-old Matthews had three shots on net (one per period) and had a plus-1 rating.

Slovak goalie Julius Hudacek made a huge save on Matthews with eight minutes left in the final frame to keep it knotted at two. Marko Dano scored in the extra period to give Slovakia the win.

Matthews has three goals and three helpers with a plus-3 rating over seven games in the tournament.

The Americans will battle the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals.

Laine, 18, was also unable to record a point in his team's 4-0 victory over the Canadians, but did appear to be in some discomfort after taking a questionable trip from Corey Perry.

Laine was in some pain on the bench, but stayed in the game and had three shots on net in 18:08 of playing time.

The Finns, who won Group B with the victory, will face Denmark in the quarter-finals.
