Team Canada’s road to the World Juniors began Thursday with the first day of selection camp at the MasterCard Centre in Toronto.

Connor McDavid, who is recovering from a broken hand, skated in a non-contact jersey and described his status as day-to-day.

"The hand feels good. The wrist is not too stiff at all. Should be all good," said McDavid, who described his status as "day-to-day."

"Right now he is going to skate with no contact and we’ll start from there and see how it goes," said Team Canada head coach Benoit Groulx. "Hopefully we are going to be able to have him for one exhibition game."

Canada has seven returning players in camp. Along with McDavid, goalie Zach Fucale, defencemen Chris Bigras and Josh Morrissey, and forwards Frederik Gauthier, Nic Petan, and Sam Reinhart are back for their second camps.

Forward Anthony Duclair, who was released to the team by the New York Rangers, will also attend the camp but was one of six players who were unable to travel to Toronto due to inclement weather.

Of the 30 players on the camp roster (two goalies, 10 defencemen, and 18 forwards), 22 will make the final team.
