Friday marks a month out from Trade Deadline Day, a national holiday for most hockey fans. We’ve been teased with a couple blockbusters already this year, including Seth Jones for Ryan Johansen and All-Star John Scott to the Habs, but hopefully there are more to come.

Rumours and speculation have taken over the NHL news cycle and excited fans with what could happen these next 31 days.

All eyes are on Tampa Bay where GM Steve Yzerman has two important decisions to make. With his team back in contention and still working toward a contract extension with Steven Stamkos, it's unlikely he'll deal the franchise centre. But despite saying there is no deadline for an extension, the prospect of losing the 25-year-old as an unrestricted free agent this off-season could force his hand ahead of Trade Deadline Day.

One trade Yzerman is almost certain to make will involve disgruntled top prospect Jonathan Drouin. A move appeared close a couple times this past month and could come down at any time while Drouin sits at home waiting.

There is some big-name intrigue in Winnipeg as well where GM Kevin Chevaldayoff has to decide whether to sign Dustin Byfuglien, Andrew Ladd, or both to contract extensions. According to reports, Byfuglien is the more likely of the two to stick around which means the captain could be shipped away by the struggling Jets.

Elsewhere, the Leafs appear to be gearing up for a fire sale sometime in February. With very few untouchables on their roster, Toronto GM Lou Lamoriello could be busy shipping away the likes of PA Parenteau, Roman Polak, Tyler Bozak, and Joffrey Lupul.

Other names that could be on the move include Eric Staal, Kris Versteeg, and Cam Ward from the Hurricanes, Kevin Shattenkirk from the Blues – in exchange for offence no doubt, and Loui Eriksson from the Bruins.

The next month should clarify the buyers from the sellers a little more and lead to some action, but it’s safe to say the Capitals, Rangers and Panthers will likely be buyers in the East, and the Blues, Predators and Wild in the West, according to reports.

It will be interesting to see what track the Montreal Canadiens take the next 31 days. After jumping out to a healthy lead in the Atlantic to start the season, the loss of Carey Price has dropped the Habs out of playoff position. Will GM Marc Bergevin make a move to provide his club a boost, or hope Price returns in time for them to make a run?
